Granite Quarry second-grader Aryaman Jana describes the picture that he created that was picked by Google to compete in a national art contest. Aryaman’s picture will compete against 49 other images from others states for the grand prize of a $30,000 scholarship and a $50,000 for his school. The image is called “The day my little sister was born.”

Purcell burned up the Warrior course in last week’s North Piedmont Conference tournament, shooting a 69 to win the event. He turned in the only sub-par round of the day. The USC Upstate recruit recorded six birdies, playing the front nine 2-under-par and the back nine at even par.
Purcell will represent Carson in the regional tournament at the Statesville Country Club.

That would require 46,110 books — and a very generous, literacy-minded community.
The Rowan-Salisbury School System is hoping for just that as it participates in the “Give Five Read Five” campaign that State Superintendent June Atkinson launched last week. Parents, business leaders and community members can help promote reading skills by donating at least five books to their local elementary school.
In addition to the schools and central office, the Salisbury Post is serving as a drop-off point for the campaign. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, we’ll be collecting books in our lobby at 131 W. Innes St.
